Al Burda Endowment
The Al Burda Endowment is an initiative conceived by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development. The Endowment falls under the Al Burda Festival, a pioneering enterprise that seeks to act as a cornerstone and meeting point for the discussion on Islamic art and new thinking for the continued development of Islamic culture.
The Endowment of AED 500,000 is distributed biannually to artists who explore Islamic art practices and continue to work towards the interpretation and reinterpretation of Islamic art and culture in their oeuvres. The selection process gathers representatives from the Ministry, board members and partners. For its first edition in 2018, the Ministry selected 10 artists.
Artists are invited to submit a detailed proposal and survey select locations across the Emirates that have been identified by the Ministry for the permanent placement of their work, allowing Al Burda to punctuate the Emirates with contemporary art. The Endowment offers artists a period of 2 years to conceive, create and place the works. The 10 artists from the 2018 edition will form a fellowship that will be appointed as part of a mentoring programme for the subsequent edition.
Works commissioned under the Endowment may be loaned to cultural institutions and events around the world as part of the Ministry’s collaborations.
